Visiting Provence: five options, only one is right for you

The Calanques and Cassis, the lavender fields of Valensole, Gordes and Roussillon, Arles in the footsteps of Van Gogh, Avignon, the Camargue. How you travel shapes your schedule, your budget and what you actually get to see. Here are the five realistic options, compared on criteria you can check.

Overview

The five options side by side

No option is best in every case. Trains and coaches are the cheapest, and a rental car gives the most freedom over several days. A private driver-guide is the right choice when you want a stress-free day: flexible hours, door-to-door service, and a driver who knows the region and can advise you.

Straight to the point

Which option for your situation

Four situations that come up again and again, and the most sensible answer for each.

Cruise stop in Marseille

Six to eight hours in port. Excursions sold by the cruise line guarantee your return on board, but at the group's pace. On your own, the ship will not wait for you: the time you must be back at the terminal becomes the number one constraint. Your driver-guide keeps that deadline in mind: in case of an accident, a traffic jam or a wildfire, they can take an alternative route more easily than a coach.

Private driver-guide, pick-up at the terminal

Family with young children

Approved child seats, naps, room in the trunk for the stroller, the option to cut a stop short. Group tours are poorly suited to this.

Private driver-guide in a van, or a rental car for a long stay

Wine day

Cassis, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes de Provence: the south of France is home to many renowned wines. Your driver-guide recommends estates based on how much time you have and how far you want to go, and helps you choose: rosé, white or red, more or less tannic, barrel-aged or not.

Private driver-guide, wine advice

Solo traveler on a budget

One person, several days on site, no tight schedule. Cost per person becomes the deciding factor.

TER trains for cities, coach tours for circuits

What each option does well, and where it falls short

Our service

Private driver-guide

A day at your own pace, with a driver who knows the region

You are picked up at your hotel, your cruise terminal or the arrivals hall at Marseille Provence Airport, and dropped off at the same place. In between, the itinerary and the timing are yours: stay an extra hour in Cassis, add a stop on the Route des Crêtes, cut Valensole short because the mistral has picked up, fit in a wine tasting at Châteauneuf-du-Pape on the way back from Avignon.

The day stays relaxed and adapts to what you feel like doing. Your driver-guide recommends a good place for lunch, the best places to buy Provençal products, wines to discover according to your taste, or the perfect viewpoint for a photo.

The price is agreed before departure and does not change, whatever the traffic. It is the most expensive option for one or two people.

A good choice if
Not for you if
  • You are traveling alone on a tight budget: a coach tour or the TER train will cost much less
  • You are spending several days touring freely with no set schedule: a rental car is better suited

Coach tour

The lowest price per person for an organized day

A route set in advance, a fixed departure time from a meeting point, a guaranteed return. Unbeatable on price for one or two people, with no planning needed. On the other hand, the group sets the pace: thirty to fifty people get off and back on at every stop, which takes up a good part of the day, and visiting times are set for everyone.

A good choice if
  • You are traveling alone or as a couple and budget comes first
  • Meeting other travelers is part of the fun
  • You are happy with a standard route with no personalized stops
Not for you if
  • You have a strict return time: a group delay is out of your control
  • You are traveling with young children or someone with reduced mobility
  • You want to reach villages that coaches serve poorly, such as Fontaine-de-Vaucluse or the Sainte-Baume

Car rental

Maximum freedom, if you are ready to drive here

Over several days, for a trip with no fixed plan, nothing beats your own car. The catch is local conditions: heavy traffic in Marseille, scarce paid parking in the city center as in Cassis, narrow roads and full parking lots in Gordes and Roussillon in summer, restricted access to some sites. On top of the rental cost come fuel, tolls, parking and the insurance deductible.

A good choice if
  • You are staying several days and changing bases
  • You are comfortable driving and parking in cities
  • You want to leave early, come back late and decide on the spot
Not for you if
  • You only have one day: the time lost at the rental agency and in parking lots adds up
  • Your day includes a wine tasting
  • You are arriving on a cruise: the time in port is too short for the round trip to the rental agency

Regional train and bus

The lowest cost, on well-served routes

Marseille–Cassis, Marseille–Aix, Marseille–Arles and Marseille–Avignon work very well by TER train. The network becomes much more restrictive once you leave the main routes: infrequent service, bus connections, stations sometimes far from the historic center — in Cassis, you still need a shuttle from the station. Valensole, Gordes and the Sainte-Baume are not usefully served. Budget in time as much as in euros.

A good choice if
  • You are heading to a town with a direct connection
  • You have time and travel light
  • Budget is the deciding factor
Not for you if
  • You want to visit several villages in one day
  • You have luggage, a stroller or a tight flight schedule

Taxi

Handy for a single trip, less suited to a day of sightseeing

A taxi works well for a one-off need: getting to a restaurant, heading back in the evening. For an excursion, two limits appear. The fare usually depends on the meter, and therefore on traffic, and is only known exactly on arrival. And unless you pay for waiting time, the car does not stay with you: you have to find another one at each stop, which is hit-and-miss when leaving the Calanques or in an inland village.

A good choice if
  • You have a single trip, with no waiting or scheduled return
  • You are leaving from a taxi rank in the city center
Not for you if
  • You want a firm budget before you set off
  • Your plans include several stops with time on site

FAQ

What we are asked most often

What is the difference between a private driver-guide and a taxi?

A taxi can be hailed in the street or taken from a taxi rank, and usually charges by the meter, at a regulated rate: the fare depends on the actual route and the traffic. A private driver-guide cannot be hailed: they must be booked in advance, and the price is set at the time of booking, based on the agreed trip. They can also be booked for the whole day, with waiting time on site.

On a cruise stop: cruise line excursion or private driver-guide?

Excursions sold by the cruise line have a real advantage: if the group is late, the ship waits. In return, the program and the pace are those of a group, often by coach. With a private driver-guide, the program is yours, and your return time to the terminal is set when you book, leaving a margin before the all-aboard time. Your driver keeps that deadline in mind and can take an alternative route in case of an accident, a traffic jam or a wildfire, more easily than a coach.

Can you visit the Calanques without a car?

Yes, in three ways. On foot from Luminy or Callelongue to Sormiou, Morgiou and Sugiton, with a real walk, access restrictions in summer depending on the fire risk and, for Sugiton, free compulsory online booking in peak season: in 2026, every day from June 27 to August 30, as well as some weekends in June and September. By boat from the Old Port or Cassis, with no landing in most packages. Or by private vehicle to the trailheads and the viewpoints of the Route des Crêtes, which removes the parking problem, a real constraint in high season.

When can you see the lavender fields of Valensole?

Flowering generally runs from the first week of June to the first week of July. Dates vary each year depending on the weather, and harvesting sometimes starts early. The best light is early and late in the day, which means not depending on a group schedule.

How many people can travel in a van?

Up to eight passengers, luggage included. Beyond that, you need two vehicles or a coach. Baby seats and booster seats are available on request when booking.

How far in advance should you book?

For an airport or train station transfer, forty-eight hours is usually enough. For a day trip between June and September, or for a cruise stop, allow one to two weeks: slots that fit ship schedules are the first to go, and lavender season is the busiest time of the year.

Does the price change if there is traffic?

No. The price is agreed and accepted before departure for the agreed trip. It does not vary with traffic or with the actual duration. Only a change of plans requested during the trip, such as an extra stop or a longer booking, leads to an adjustment discussed on the spot.

Methodology

How this comparison was put together

  • The comparison covers ways of visiting, not named companies. No identified competitor is mentioned or ranked.
  • The five criteria used are factual and can be checked with any provider: price, capacity, itinerary flexibility, pick-up point, constraints to plan for.
  • Prices are orders of magnitude collected in September 2026 from public sources: coach day trips sold per seat from Marseille, a car rental comparison site, TER fares in the Sud region, the regulated taxi fare.
  • Each option, including ours, is presented with the cases where it is not the right choice.
